The Story of “Mr. Chardonnay”

Chuck Ortman’s expertise with Chardonnay is legendary and ultimately earned him the nickname “Mr. Chardonnay” from the Wine Spectator. Like his father, Matt Ortman has embraced and mastered the varietal. Together, Matt and Chuck endeavor to make fruit-forward Chardonnays in the renowned “Ortman style.”

Chuck was one of the first California winemakers to explore the benefits of barrel fermentation. He also made the 1973 Spring Mountain Chardonnay that was selected as one of just 10 white wines—California Chardonnays and French Burgundies—for the prestigious Paris Wine Tasting of 1976. Chuck was also one of the first winemakers to embrace Chardonnay from Edna Valley near San Luis Obispo, which is today known as one of California’s premier Chardonnay regions.

Edna Valley Chardonnay remains a cornerstone bottling at Ortman Family Wines. We endeavor to make fruit-forward Chardonnays that are balanced and complex, and that finish with harmony on the palate. This is the “Ortman style” that we have cultivated over the years, and we invite you to visit us and taste it for yourself.
