the ortman style
At Ortman Family Wines, we are proud to be known for a distinct style of wine that is four decades in the making.
Wine writer Dan Berger summed up the “Ortman style” as “restraint and delicacy, with the character of the grape more important than weight, power or oak.” He also described it as an “emphasis on fruit rather than production techniques” and a “demand for less oak, not more.”
We describe the Ortman style similarly, summarizing it as the pursuit of “balance, elegance and food friendliness.” This style was established by Chuck Ortman, and is now advanced by second-generation winemaker Matt Ortman.
For many years, our approach went against the popular grain of oaky, heavy-handed Chardonnays and other wines. It now turns out that we were ahead of the curve as more and more people seek balanced wines with authentic fruit flavors that complement, rather than compete with, cuisine.
