Winemaster Chuck Ortman
Chuck Ortman is recognized as one of California's most accomplished winemakers. His winemaking career spans nearly 40 years in California, during which he cultivated his signature "Ortman style" of winemaking.
Chuck's winemaking career began as a "cellar rat" at Napa Valley's Heitz Cellars in 1968. He quickly worked his way up the winemaking ranks, and by the mid-1970s he was a renowned winemaking consultant to some of Napa Valley's finest wineries, including Far Niente, Shafer and Cain. Along the way, Chuck became one of the first California winemakers to explore the benefits of barrel fermentation of Chardonnay, earning him the nickname "Mr. Chardonnay."
Chuck later founded Meridian Vineyards in Paso Robles. The success of Meridian Vineyards helped establish the Central Coast as one of California's most dynamic and prestigious winegrowing regions.
With Ortman Family Vineyards, Chuck has returned to the accountability of a limited-production family winery, advancing the Ortman winemaking legacy with his son and winemaker Matt Ortman.
Winemaker Matt Ortman
Matt Ortman is a second-generation winemaker who guides the day-to-day operations of Ortman Family Vineyards along with his wife Lisa, who serves as the winery's sales and marketing director. In addition to his roles as winemaker and general manager, Matt is also actively involved in sales and logistics.
Matt grew up in Napa Valley, assisting his father Chuck during harvest and igniting an early interest in winemaking. Matt later earned a degree in construction management from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, forging skills that are now applied toward vineyard and winery development.
Prior to launching Ortman Family Vineyards, Matt apprenticed at Italy's famed Castello di Gabbiano winery, bringing a European influence to his winemaking approach and inspiring the addition of Sangiovese to our small family of wines.
At Ortman Family Vineyards, Matt's focus is squarely on crafting artisan wines that represent a continuation of his family's winemaking tradition and an advancement of the Ortman style.
