Our Ortman Family Vineyards label is reserved for limited-edition bottlings from some of the finest small vineyards in Paso Robles, Edna Valley and Santa Rita Hills. These wines are crafted in small lots in the acclaimed "Ortman style," which emphasizes balance, elegance and food friendliness.
Chuck Ortman was one of the first California winemakers to explore the benefits of fermenting Chardonnay in French oak barrels, a classic Burgundian technique that helped earn Chuck the nickname "Mr. Chardonnay" in industry circles. Today, he and Winemaker Matt Ortman advance their family tradition by crafting barrel-fermented Chardonnay with a stylistic emphasis on balance, elegance and finesse.

Fresh & bright...
"Chuck Ortman has always demonstrated a sure hand with Chardonnay, and that touch shows in this release. It's fresh & bright, yet it shows some intensity, with flavors of lemon and green apple with some well-integrated oak."

For several years, as he drove along Highway 101 near Avila Beach in San Luis Obispo County, Winemaker Matt Ortman admired Salisbury Vineyard, dreaming of the day he might secure Pinot Noir grapes from this unique site located just a mile from the ocean. That day finally came in 2007, and the result was seven barrels of Pinot Noir that captured the cool-climate character of Salisbury Vineyard.

Our passion for the Pinot Noir grape extends northward to Oregon’s Willamette Valley, where we seek an inspiring contrast to our Pinot Noir bottlings from California’s Santa Rita Hills. The 2006 vintage hails equally from Temperance Hill Vineyard in the Eola Hills and Parish Hill Vineyard in the Red Hills of Dundee. Both vineyards are progressively and exquisitely tended, resulting in fruit of the highest caliber for a pure expression of Oregon Pinot Noir.

Our 2006 Syrah hails exclusively from Brave Oak Vineyard in Paso Robles, where warm afternoons yield nightly to coastal breezes. This reciprocal climate offers excellent growing conditions for Syrah, which are accentuated by Brave Oak Vineyard's notable terroir and progressive viticulture. We have known Brave Oak winegrower Tony Domingos for many years, and he and his vineyard were at the top of our list when we added Syrah to our small family of wines.
“Recommended…Elegant soft cherry that develops in intensity.”

Winemaker Matt Ortman has long been a fan of Paso Robles Petite Sirah, and he jumped at the chance to make it when fruit from Wittstrom Vineyard became available. This vineyard occupies an ideal site for Petite Sirah, yielding a wine that is big yet elegant with lusciously intense flavors. The 2007 vintage is our second release from Wittstrom Vineyard, and Petite Sirah now occupies a firm place in our small family of wines.
